Furniture Removal Across Arlington, District by District

The mid-century housing across north Arlington and the older parts of south Arlington produces furniture from an era when it was built from solid timber. A dresser from 1968 weighs perhaps three times a modern equivalent, and it does not come apart. That is a lifting problem and it is where a two-person minimum stops being enough.

The rental corridors produce the opposite: flat-pack that was assembled in the room and is easier to dismantle than to carry. Taking it apart on a landing is usually faster than negotiating a stairwell with it whole.

Knowing which you have changes the crew that turns up, which is why photographs are worth more than a description.

In the older north Arlington housing it is weight and geometry together. Rooms in those houses were laid out before open plans, so a large piece often has to turn twice between the bedroom and the front door — and a solid-timber dresser is too heavy to lift over a rail while it turns. That is a three-person job rather than a two-person one, and pretending otherwise is how door frames get damaged.

In the rental corridors the difficulty is the stairwell rather than the piece. Flat-pack is light, but it is also fragile at its joints once it has been assembled and moved a few times, so forcing it round a landing usually breaks it in a way that makes the rest of the carry worse. Taking it apart first is quicker.

Across the newer south Arlington subdivisions it is neither — it is volume. First-replacement-cycle households rarely clear one piece, and the load is usually four or five items that have been accumulating in a garage.
