How to Get Rid of a Couch in Arlington: Donate, Curb or Haul

Which route works for a couch comes down to two things you can check in five minutes: what condition it is really in, and roughly how much it weighs.

The short answer

In Arlington, TX, a clean couch from a home without pets or smokers can go to Trinity Habitat's ReStore or a Mission Arlington pickup. City bulky collection takes items under 50 pounds, up to 2 cubic yards a week. Otherwise sell it, or book Junk Koala Arlington: a couch lists at $129, a sectional at $199, before tax.

Donation test
Sound, clean, and from a home without pets or smokers
City curb limit
Under 50 pounds per item, 2 cubic yards a week, out by 7 a.m.
Crew price
Couch $129; sectional $199 plus $35 heavy-item handling; before tax
Stairs
$25 per flight where there is no elevator

Two checks that decide the route: condition and weight

Before choosing between donating, selling, the curb and a crew, spend five minutes with the couch itself. Condition decides whether anyone else will want it. Weight decides whether the city crew will lift it. Skipping both is how people learn the answer at the door of a donation center, or from a tag left on the couch at the curb.

For condition, look at it the way a stranger would. Sit in every seat, lift one corner to see whether the frame twists or creaks, unzip a cushion, and smell the fabric up close. Look along the seams and under the deck for any sign of bed bugs. Anything you would have to explain away is a reason a charity will turn it down.

For weight, the useful line is 50 pounds, because that is Arlington's limit for each bulky item at the curb. Many full-size sofas weigh more than that, and a sleeper sofa, with its steel bed mechanism, is far past it. A sectional is several pieces held together with brackets, and taking it apart changes both what each piece weighs and how it gets through a door.

What a donation-ready couch looks like

If every line is true, a donation or a free listing is realistic. If two or more are not, go straight to the curb or a crew.

  • A frame that stays square when one corner is lifted
  • No rips, burns or worn-through arms
  • No stains you would rather not explain
  • No pet hair worked into the fabric, no pet odor
  • No smoke smell, even a faint one
  • Every cushion present, with covers that zip
  • Sleeper or recliner mechanism working fully
  • No sign of bed bugs along seams or under the deck
  • Upholstery dry, with no water marks or mildew
  • Legs and feet all attached

Arlington donation options and their terms

Trinity Habitat for Humanity runs a ReStore at 905 W. Mayfield Rd. in Arlington. Its terms for upholstered furniture are short: good condition, and not from a household with pets or smokers. Pickup is free once a donation's value reaches the minimum on its donate page; anything below that, you drop off yourself.

Mission Arlington, a local nonprofit, schedules pickups of reusable household items, furniture included, from Arlington homes Monday through Saturday. Its page asks you to call 817-277-6620, preferably several days ahead, so a couch you decide to part with on a Saturday morning will not be gone by that afternoon.

Donations can also go to the Salvation Army's thrift store and donation center at 1301 East Abram St., which takes them Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; for pickups, its regional page sends donors to satruck.org. Whichever you choose, whoever receives the couch makes the final call, and one refused at the door comes back home with you. The checklist above is how to avoid that trip.

Arlington curbside bulky collection, in plain terms

Homes on Arlington's residential curbside service get bulky-item collection once a week, on the regular collection day. The allowance is 2 cubic yards a week, which the city describes as the size of a washer and dryer, and each item or bundle must weigh less than 50 pounds. Everything has to be at the curb by 7 a.m.; the city's 2024 cart-rollout guide says items may go out from 7 p.m. the evening before.

Past 2 cubic yards, the city tells residents to call Republic Services at 817-317-2000 to schedule a special collection, which carries a fee. Bulky waste over the limit that is not collected has to be removed from the curb within 24 hours, after which the city can remove it and add a fee to the next water bill. An Oops tag on an overweight couch carries the same 24-hour expectation.

The curb suits a light loveseat, a small apartment sofa, or a separated sectional whose pieces each come in under the limit. It does not suit a sleeper sofa or a heavy reclining sectional. If you rent in an apartment community, ask the leasing office how large items are handled before anything goes near the dumpster.

Selling or giving it away without a week of messages

A couch in good shape often moves faster through Facebook Marketplace, Nextdoor or a local Buy Nothing group than through a charity, because the buyer brings the truck. The listing does most of the work: daylight photos from the front and side, the fabric and any flaws stated up front, and the three measurements people actually need, which are width, depth and height.

Price it to move rather than to recover what it cost. A low price, or a free listing that says "you carry, by Sunday", filters out most of the people who would not have shown up anyway. Ask for a phone number before giving out your address, have someone else at home for the pickup, and do not leave the couch on a porch or at the curb overnight waiting for a buyer, where the weather may decide the question for you.

Set a deadline. If nobody has collected it by then, move on to the curb or a crew rather than letting the listing drift into a third week while the couch takes up the garage.

When a crew is the straightforward answer

In the Junk Koala price book, a couch or sofa lists at $129, and every job has a $129 minimum. A sectional lists at $199 and counts as a heavy item, so the $35 heavy-handling charge brings it to $234. Each flight of stairs without an elevator adds $25, and booking online takes $20 off at checkout. All of these are before sales tax.

The crew carries it from where it sits, upstairs walk-ups included, takes a sectional apart at its brackets when a landing turn demands it, and secures a sofa-bed mechanism so it cannot fall open on the stairs. Nothing has to be dragged to the curb first, and an armchair ($79) or a table ($79) can share the visit at its own list price.

If the couch passes the checklist and you would rather it went to a charity, say so at booking and the crew keeps it apart for donation. One that fails it is disposed of, which is the honest outcome for most couches that have spent a decade with a dog.

  • Standard sofas, loveseats and sleeper sofas
  • Sectionals separated where the stairwell demands it
  • Upper-floor apartments without elevators
  • Donatable pieces kept apart if you ask
  • Armchairs, ottomans and tables on the same visit

FAQ

Related questions

Will the city of Arlington pick up my old couch on bulk day?
Yes, if it weighs less than 50 pounds and fits within your 2-cubic-yard weekly bulky allowance. Set it out before 7 a.m. on your collection day. Many full-size sofas and almost any sleeper sofa are over the weight limit, so check before dragging it out; an overweight item can be tagged and left behind.
Will Habitat for Humanity take my used couch in Arlington?
Yes, if it is in good condition and has not been in a home with pets or smokers; those are Trinity Habitat's stated terms for upholstered furniture. Its ReStore at 905 W. Mayfield Rd. picks up free above a minimum donation value, and smaller donations are dropped off.
How much does it cost to have a couch hauled away in Arlington?
$129 for a standard couch in the Junk Koala price book, before sales tax. A sectional is $199 plus $35 heavy-item handling, stairs without an elevator add $25 a flight, and online booking takes $20 off at checkout.
Does it cost more to remove a sectional from an upstairs apartment?
Yes, by $25 for each flight of stairs where there is no elevator, shown as its own line. That is on top of the sectional's $199 list price and the $35 heavy-item charge. The crew separates the pieces on the landing when the turn is too tight to carry it whole.
What should I do with a couch that might have bed bugs?
Do not donate, sell or give it away. Wrap it in plastic sheeting where it stands before it moves through the house, tell whoever collects it, and treat the room as well, because removing the couch does not remove the infestation.
