Hot Tub Removal in Arlington: Cost Drivers, Disconnecting Power, Cut-Up vs. Whole

Nobody can price a hot tub from a list, including us. What it costs depends on the path from the tub to the street more than on the tub itself.

The short answer

Hot tub removal in Arlington, TX has no list price: the Junk Koala price book quotes hot tubs by hand, from photos of the tub and its route out. Access, size, any deck around it and whether it must be cut up on site set the figure. First, you drain it and a licensed electrician disconnects the power.

Why a hot tub never gets a list price

The Junk Koala price book prices most things from a list. It makes exceptions for pianos, hot tubs, safes, mixed construction debris and loads over one truck, and the reason is the same for each: the work depends on what a person finds on site, not on what the item is called.

Two identical spas can be completely different jobs. One sits on a pad twenty feet from an open driveway and rolls out whole without much fuss. The other sits behind a narrow gate, three steps down, wrapped in a cedar deck, and has to be cut into sections where it stands. A price fixed in advance would overcharge the first owner or undercharge the second, so the quote comes from photographs of the tub and, more importantly, of the route out.

For a sense of scale, the price book's figure for a completely full truck of ordinary household junk is $699. A hot tub is not priced from that table, because the space it takes on the truck is rarely what decides the work.

What moves a hot tub quote up or down

FactorWhy it changes the price
The route to the truckGate width, side-yard clearance, slopes, steps and turns. A tub tipped on its edge needs a clear path a little wider than the tub is deep, plus room for the dolly.
Size and typeA compact two-person spa and a large family tub are different lifts. Swim spas are assessed case by case.
Deck or surroundA freestanding cabinet lifts away. A tub set into a deck may need boards taken up around it, and anything tied into the structure of the house is a contractor's job first.
Whole or cut upLeaving whole needs the path and enough hands. Cutting on site adds saw time but gets a tub through almost any gate.
Distance and terrainA long carry across lawn, gravel or down a slope takes more people and more time than a paved approach.
Readiness on the dayA tub still full of water or still wired cannot be started, which means a second trip nobody wants to pay for.
What else goesSteps, the cover, a cover lifter and other yard junk can ride on the same visit.

Power off and disconnected by a licensed electrician

A hard-wired hot tub usually runs on its own high-current circuit, often through a disconnect box mounted near the tub. Disconnecting it means more than flipping the breaker: the wiring at the tub has to be removed or terminated so nothing live is left in the yard once the tub has gone. That is a licensed electrician's job. Junk Koala Arlington does not disconnect electrical supplies, and nobody on a hauling crew should.

Book the electrician first and the removal second, and ask them to leave the supply safe for whatever comes next, whether that is a new tub, a patio or nothing at all. A smaller plug-in model only needs unplugging, though the outlet it used stays where it is.

If your tub has a gas heater, the gas supply needs to be shut off and capped by a licensed plumber before anyone arrives. The branch does not disconnect gas either.

Draining it yourself, the day before

Draining is the owner's job, not the crew's, and it takes longer than people expect, so start a day early.

  1. 1

Turn the power off at the breaker first

A pump or heater that runs dry can burn out, and a dead circuit is safer to stand near while water is moving. If the electrician has already disconnected it, this is done.

  2. 2

    Find the drain valve

Usually a spigot low on the cabinet; the owner's manual shows where. Attach a garden hose and open it.

  3. 3

Speed it up with a submersible pump

Gravity through a hose is slow. A rented or borrowed sump pump empties a tub far faster.

  4. 4

Send the water somewhere it can soak in

A lawn or a planting bed that can take it, away from the foundation and your neighbor's side of the fence.

  5. 5

    Sponge out the footwells

The last few inches hide in the seats and the filter housing. Leftover water adds weight and spills once cutting starts.

Cut up on site, or carried out whole

Whole is the quicker option when the route allows it. The tub goes up on its edge, onto dollies or rollers, and out through a wide gate, an open side yard or a driveway approach, with enough people to control it. The yard sees a crew for a short while and not much else.

Cutting is the answer when the fence or gate went in after the tub did, which is common. The crew cuts through the shell, cabinet and frame where the tub stands, the sections go straight onto the truck, and the pad is swept before they leave. It is noisy for a while, so a word with the neighbors helps. Nothing is cut except the tub and the parts that go with it.

You do not have to choose. Photographs of the gate, the path and the tub settle it, and the quote reflects whichever method the route requires.

  • Whole: wide gate or open side, enough hands
  • Cut up: narrow gate, fence or deck in the way
  • Shell, cabinet, cover and steps go together
  • Pad swept before the crew leaves

Where the shell ends up, and the do-it-yourself alternative

Expect most of a hot tub shell to go to disposal. Acrylic or plastic bonded to fiberglass and sprayed foam does not separate cleanly into anything a recycler wants. Metal parts, such as the pump, the heater and any steel framing, are pulled out for scrap where they can be.

If the tub still works, selling it whole and letting the buyer arrange the move is the cheapest route by far. A listing that states the gate width and the distance to the street draws serious replies, and the access problem then belongs to the buyer.

If you would rather cut it up yourself, Arlington homeowners whose permanent residence is in the city get three free landfill visits a year at 800 Mosier Valley Road, in a passenger vehicle or a trailer up to 16 feet. The landfill's rate card lists a charge for vehicles that are not properly tarped, so cover the sections before you drive. Renters, landlords and contractors pay the standard rates.

Photograph the gate, not just the tub

Three photos (the tub, the path, and the narrowest point on it) are enough for a written quote.

FAQ

Related questions

How much does it cost to remove a hot tub in Arlington?
There is no fixed figure; hot tubs are quoted by hand from photographs. Access to the truck and whether the tub has to be cut up on site change the work more than its size does, so photos of the route matter as much as photos of the tub.
Do I need an electrician before getting my hot tub removed?
Yes, for any hard-wired tub. A licensed electrician should disconnect the circuit and leave the supply safe before the crew arrives; Junk Koala Arlington does not do electrical work. A plug-in tub only needs unplugging.
Who drains the hot tub before removal, me or the crew?
You do, ideally the day before. Turn off the power, open the drain valve with a hose attached or use a submersible pump to speed it up, then sponge out the footwells. A tub with water still in it cannot be moved or cut.
Can a hot tub be removed without taking down my fence?
Usually, yes, because a tub that will not fit through the gate can be cut into sections on site and carried out in pieces. The fence stays where it is. Send photos of the gate and the path so the quote reflects the cutting.
Can I take a cut-up hot tub to the Arlington landfill myself?
If you are an Arlington homeowner, yes, using one of your three free yearly visits in a passenger vehicle or a trailer up to 16 feet. Tarp the load, bring a driver license that matches your water utility account, and call the scale house at 817-354-2300 if you are unsure the sections will be accepted.
